FORMAL IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY

I support the formal impeachment inquiry announced this week by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The recent developments dealing with the whistleblower complaint and Ukraine is the straw that broke the camel’s back. No one is above the law. The whistleblower account is credible and concerning, as evidenced by attempts from White House officials to lock down all records of the call, including the official transcript which still has not been released. It is time to accelerate the House’s investigations to ensure the Constitution, the rule of law and our national security are protected and defended.

SAFE BANKING act PASSES HOUSE

Yesterday, the U.S House of Representatives passed landmark legislation to reform federal cannabis laws and reduce the public safety risk in communities here in Colorado and across the country.
H.R. 1595, the Secure and Fair Enforcement Act of 2019 (SAFE Banking Act) passed by a vote of 321 to 103. The bill allows marijuana-related businesses in states with some form of legalized marijuana and strict regulatory structures to access the banking system. Here’s why it’s important:

Thousands of employees, businesses and communities across this country have been forced to deal in piles of cash because of the conflict between state and federal law. After six years of working on this bill, the SAFE Banking Act will go a long way in getting cash off our streets and providing certainty so financial institutions can work with cannabis businesses and employees.

In April, the Senate companion bill (S. 1200) was introduced and the Senate Banking Committee held a hearing on the issue in July. Senate Banking Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-ID) recently announced plans to take up cannabis banking legislation this fall. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate as they take up this important issue.
