Since May 2005, Congressman Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) has been carrying a
laminated card in his wallet that he received from a 13-year-old Everitt Middle
School student (Wheat Ridge, CO) describing what the American Dream meant to
him. Today, Perlmutter praised a group of U.S. Senators for introducing a
bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill that will be a step forward
for thousands of hardworking folks to help them achieve their American Dream.
Perlmutter said, "Though not perfect, I'm encouraged
by the work a bipartisan group of Senators is doing to address immigration in a
responsible and compassionate way that secures our borders and ensures those
who are working hard, paying taxes, getting an education, learning English and
not committing felonies or violent crimes, have a path to become citizens of
our country and achieve their American Dream. I hope members of the House
will continue working to develop and vote on comprehensive immigration
reform."
Below is
the text of the laminated card Perlmutter carries with him.
"My American Dream is like
this... I would want people to be able to know that if they come to America
they can know they will have a better life, they will have a safe place for
their kid to grow up and be free to have the life they want - the life they
pictured when they were kids."
Perlmutter has been a proponent of comprehensive immigration
reform since at least 2005 and cosponsored the DREAM Act and other
comprehensive immigration reform legislation including the STRIVE Act and the
CIR ASAP Act.
