USA Today Highlights Perlmutter and Bipartisan Members Who Supported of Simpson-Bowles Budget

In case you missed it, yesterday USA Today released an editorial highlighting the courage of U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter and 37 other Republican and Democratic House members who supported the Cooper-LaTourette budget plan which was modeled after the Simpson-Bowles budget committee recommendations.

Unfortunately, this responsible, bipartisan plan was defeated 382-38.

The editorial noted, "...There aren't many heroes in this soul-destroying process, but we found a tiny band of 38 — the 22 Democrats and 16 Republicans who voted for a bipartisan alternative budget based on the proposal from President Obama's fiscal commission in 2010.... This, or something very much like it, is where every non-partisan budget expert and every realistic politician in Washington knows Congress will have to go to solve the budget problem. Entitlements in their current form are unsustainably expensive, and tax cuts have left revenues at historic lows, inadequate to pay for the government services Americans demand....The job of representatives in a democracy is to govern, which requires compromise."

Perlmutter supported the Cooper-LaTourette plan modeled after the Simpson-Bowles commission stating, "it is a balanced plan putting both spending cuts and revenue on the table.  It makes significant cuts big enough to matter -- $4.2 trillion in deficit reduction -- reforms the tax code to lower rates, broadens the tax base and reduces the deficit.  It is a start to real economic security for our nation."

Perlmutter will continue to work with members of both parties to find responsible ways to cut spending, uphold the promises we've made to our seniors, veterans and children, and make critical investments to grow the jobs of the future here in our country so we have a strong, stable economy built to last.
