209 More Cops Likely for the 7th Congressional District

May 15, 2007

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) today joined a bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 1700, the COPS Reauthorization Act. This measure is designed to help local law enforcement agencies hire an additional 50,000 police officers nationally over the next six years. It is likely this will mean an additional 209 police officers on the beat throughout Colorado’s 7th Congressional District.

The 7th Congressional District of Colorado includes parts of Jefferson, Adams and Arapahoe counties.

"Today, I am proud to vote for this measure that will reinvigorate the highly successful COPS hiring grants program," said Rep. Perlmutter. "Since 1994, this program helped local law enforcement agencies hire 489 additional police officers and/or sheriff deputies in what is now the 7th District of Colorado."

Following are ways law enforcement in the 7th District of Colorado have benefited under the COPS program:

Funding

School Resource Officers

Technology Grants

"With crime back on the rise, reauthorizing the COPS program is more vital than ever," concluded Rep. Perlmutter. "By authorizing COPS hiring grants, COPS technology grants, and community prosecutor grants local law enforcement agencies will once again have the tools they need to fight crime and help us bring crime rates back down. I hope the Senate acts on this bill quickly and the President signs it."

This legislation has been endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriffs Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, the National Association of Police Organizations, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the National League of Cities.
