Rep. Ed Perlmutter Joins New Dem Budget Discipline Working Group

Group focused on promoting deficit and debt reduction

February 5, 2010

Earlier this week, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07), a member of the New Democrat Coalition, joined colleagues to unveil a Working Group to promote fiscally responsible policies that target Federal spending and reduce the national debt.  For nearly a decade, our nation saw excessive spending almost double our nation’s debt from $5.7 trillion to $10.6 trillion in 2009.  The New Dem Budget Discipline Working Group is tasked with identifying solutions to shrink the debt and balance the federal government’s checkbook.  Building on Rep. Perlmutter’s and the New Dems long-standing support for PAYGO policies, the Working Group will develop creative solutions to reduce the deficit and national debt while also identifying opportunities to streamline existing Federal programs to ensure taxpayer dollars are being invested wisely and effectively.

“I joined the Budget Discipline Working Group with my New Dem colleagues to find innovative solutions to reduce the debt and responsibly invest in our nation’s future.  When I served in the State Legislature we balanced the budget each year, Congress should do the same. Families in the 7th Congressional District are tightening their belts to make ends meet and Washington should follow suit,” stated Perlmutter.  “As a member of the Financial Services Committee I’ve worked for the past year on tough regulatory reforms to stabilize Wall Street and protect  Main Street and this group will build upon that work.  I look forward to promoting common-sense solutions to reduce the debt and place our nation back on firm financial footing.”

The New Dem Budget Discipline Working Group, unveiled by 17 New Dems includes: Co-Chairs Rep. Etheridge (NC-2) and Rep. Foster (IL-14), along with Rep. Barrow (GA-12), Rep. Bean (IL-8), Rep. Carnahan (MO-3), Rep. Carney (PA-10), Rep. Heinrich (NM-1), Rep Himes (CT-4), Rep. Kind (WI-3), Rep. Kratovil (MD-1), Rep. McMahon (NY-13), Rep. Moran (VA-8), Rep. Perlmutter (CO-7), Rep. Peters (MI-9), Rep. Polis (CO-2), Rep. Schwartz (PA-13) and Rep. Smith (WA-9).

The New Democrat Coalition is a Coalition of 67 members of the U.S. House of Representatives who are dedicated to the prosperity and security of American families and business.  Founded in 1997, the NDC provides Members of Congress with the opportunity to advance a common sense policy agenda focused on empowering the U.S. to grow economically and maintain a vibrant job market, preserving the U.S. standing as the world's leader in innovation and technological advancement, and strengthening our economic and national security.  For more information, visit the New Dems website at http://ndc.crowley.house.gov.
