Perlmutter to Bring Constituent and Retired School Teacher Facing High Health Care Costs to the 2020 State of the Union
Washington D.C. — U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) today announced his guest for the 2020 State of the Union, Kim Parfitt. Kim is a constituent of Lakewood, Colo. and a retired public school teacher.
Kim recently retired and experienced a health care issue, leaving her concerned about future health care costs and the possibility of spending her savings on health care costs. Kim’s retirement package includes health insurance but the plans have high deductible and premiums. In October 2019, Kim needed to go to the emergency room late at night, and after being treated for a virus and slight dehydration, was released after some basic care and tests. She received a bill with an out-of-pocket amount due of nearly $5,000. Because of the high deductible plan, the entire amount was to be paid by her. She did not qualify for financial assistance. In reviewing the charges from her ER visit, she also ran into several issues around a lack of transparency regarding facility fees and the rating (e.g. Level 4) assigned to her visit.
“Kim, like many Coloradans, are understandably concerned about the high cost of health care and the lack of transparency around charges from their medical providers,” said Perlmutter. “The Affordable Care Act brought critical coverage to thousands of Coloradans and we must continue to work to improve the ACA, starting with transparency in all healthcare pricing and ensuring everyone has access to affordable, quality healthcare.”
Perlmutter introduced bipartisan legislation, H.R. 1409, the Transparency in All Health Care Pricing Act to require all medical providers, including insurers and drug companies, to publicly disclose costs for all products, services and procedures. Perlmutter also supports legislation to provide individuals ages 50-64 the option to buy into Medicare while helping to stabilize the ACA marketplaces and reduce overall costs within the healthcare system.
