On Sat., April 21, 2007 at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), an auxiliary of the U. S. Air Force, will hold a search and rescue (SAREX) exercise at Jefferson County Airport. Rep. Perlmutter will be presented with an official flight suit as he becomes an honorary inductee into the Congressional CAP Squadron. Rep. Perlmutter will participate in the SAREX and will fly in a simulated mission in a CAP aircraft.
CAP is a voluntary civilian organization that is funded by the U.S. Air Force and the State of Colorado. CAP is responsible for searching for downed aircraft in addition to conducting other homeland security activities. In Colorado, CAP operates 15 aircraft and 19 emergency vehicles deployed throughout the state. Last year alone it participated in over 237 missions including searching for downed aircraft and missing persons. Saturday’s exercise will test the organization’s overall readiness to respond to homeland security events, and state and local emergencies.
Perlmutter states, “I have the utmost respect and admiration for the mission of the Civil Air Patrol and its volunteer work for the State of Colorado and this nation. It will be an honor and a privilege to accept this honorary flight suit and participate in such an important exercise. As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, I will continue to work with groups such as CAP in order to keep America safe and secure.”
Invited to attend the event will be: Donavan Puffer and Joe O’Keefe of the Dept. of Homeland Security, Jefferson County Commissioners and Jefferson County Sheriff Ted Mink.
