Rep. Perlmutter Supports Resolution Commemorating the Library of Congress’ Veterans Oral History Project Week
November 3, 2009
Encourages Members of Congress to Record Veterans Stories for Posterity
Today, Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) released the following statement after the House of Representatives unanimously passed House Resolution 866, establishing the designation of a National Veterans History Project Week. The legislation encourages public participation in a national project to collect and preserve the stories of our veterans who served in times of war and conflict.
“The Veterans Oral History Project is an important project documenting the history of our brave men and women who helped defend this nation. Preserving this history honors the service and sacrifice of our veterans and provides an important learning opportunity for our young people. Every day we lose more veterans and therefore lose a part of our nation’s history. I encourage all members of Congress to work with schools and veterans’ organizations in their districts to help preserve this important part of American history. The history of our veterans is the history of our nation,” stated Perlmutter.
In 2008, Rep. Perlmutter’s office in conjunction with the Community College of Aurora and the Library of Congress produced a documentary film highlighting veterans from the 7th Congressional District who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam entitled: The Wars We Fought, Front Line Stories of Colorado Veterans. The film was distributed to high schools in the 7th Congressional District and to the Air Force Academy to help bolster their curricula. Additionally, The Wars We Fought was selected to be part of the 2009 G.I. Film Festival held in Washington DC as one of 40 films selected out of over 2,500 films submitted to participate in the festival. The film has been shown at several community organization meetings including Rotary Clubs, veteran organizations and also featured on the Community College of Aurora’s community television network.
