Perlmutter Congratulates Aurora Police Department on COPS Funding
October 1, 2009
Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) announced a $208,960 Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), Secure Our Schools (SOS) Grant Award for the Aurora Police Department. The COPS Office will award almost $16 million under the FY09 Secure Our Schools (SOS) grant program. Grants will be awarded to 128 law enforcement agencies in 38 states.
“This grant award is a testament to the quality and professionalism of the Aurora Police Department. These funds will help make schools in Aurora and Arapahoe County safer and more secure. Improving the safety of our schools promotes a healthy and positive environment for our children to learn. Adequately funding our local law enforcement agencies is important for our communities and is one of my top priorities in Congress,” stated Perlmutter.
SOS grants provide funding to state, local, or tribal governments to assist with the procurement of school safety resources and the opportunity to establish and enhance a variety of school safety equipment and/or programs. Each SOS grant is two years in duration, and provides a maximum federal share of $500,000. Funding under this program may be requested for such things as: placement and use of metal detectors; locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures; security assessments; security training of personnel and students; coordination with local law enforcement; and any other measure that may provide a significant increase in security.
