June 9, 2009
U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07), is pleased to announce the Community College Of Aurora was awarded $149,909.00 from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant, which goes into effect August 1, 2009, will fund training and support for 13 faculty members at the Community College Of Aurora to implement a Geographic Information System module in their classroom. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a combination of software and hardware used to organize, manage, and analyze geographically related information. This allows the user to visually interpret data in order to make connections.
"The Community College of Aurora does an outstanding job educating students and turning them into high caliber employees in the American workforce. The National Science Foundation grant will help continue the tradition of excellence by familiarizing students with an advanced new technology keeping them competitive in the global economy. It is important for us to continue investing in the education of our youth in order to build a stronger foundation for the future." stated Perlmutter.
These GIS modules will help students learn problem solving and collaborative skills while informing them about GIS career opportunities. The program will also bolster efforts towards finding better ways to implement GIS learning in classrooms across the country. This in turn will help familiarize and garner interest in GIS occupations among students.
