Rep. Perlmutter Statement on Women's History MonthMarch 3, 2009 “Every March our country celebrates Women’s History Month. This is a time to reflect on the contributions women make to strengthen the values and success of our country. As a member of Congress, it is an honor and a privilege to serve with the first female Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi. Her leadership on tough issues facing our nation is an inspiration to me and many Americans. The 111th Congress recently passed important legislation recognizing the economic equality of women is central to the economic equality of all Americans. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act restores the ability of women and all workers to access our judicial system when they are harmed by discrimination. When President Obama signed this into law, he made clear equal pay for equal work is a fundamental American value. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress and the Obama Administration to strengthen legislation to benefit women, children and families. After all, they are the future and the foundation of our great nation.” |
