Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) issued the following statement on an agreement with Leader Nancy Pelosi regarding term limits for senior leadership in the Democratic Caucus and his vote for Speaker in the 116th Congress:
“I have pushed for new leadership because I want to see generational change in the Democratic Caucus. I am now convinced that generational change has started and will continue to accelerate. Therefore, I will support Nancy Pelosi for Speaker. I do so for the following reasons:
We elected a new generation of leaders with the election of Ben Ray Lujan, Hakeem Jeffries and Cheri Bustos;
We’ve opened our rules and procedures to give all members more say in legislation presented and passed in the House and have developed new policies that strengthen integrity in government;
A number of us presented a proposal concerning term limits for senior leadership and Nancy Pelosi has agreed to abide by the proposal;
Opportunities for leadership development will be available for those who aspire to senior caucus or committee positions to assure smoother transitions, if and when the time requires; and,
After numerous conversations with Nancy Pelosi on a whole array of subjects, I am confident that she is the best person to lead a very diverse and ambitious caucus while contending with the difficult challenges facing the country.
“An important conversation was started here and going forward I feel confident our leaders will work to share their knowledge, experience and skill with those who aspire to leadership for the sake of our caucus, our party and our country.”
