Congressman Perlmutter Tours Adams County Head Start
The Adams County Board of Commissioners welcomed U.S. Congressman Ed Perlmutter for a tour of the county’s Head Start program on April 7, 2008. The vision of Adams County ’s Head Start program is to ensure that children enter kindergarten with the competencies necessary to succeed in school and to empower parents and caregivers to be their child’s most important teacher.
“Head Start is a critical program for our children. It gives our kids a healthy start in life by preparing them for school early on and instilling the skills they need for life-long learning,” said Congressman Perlmutter.
During his tour, Congressman Perlmutter interacted with children enrolled in the program and met with Head Start parents and community leaders.
“We were honored to have Congressman Perlmutter take the time to visit our center and see first-hand how this program enhances the lives of our county’s children,” said Commissioner Nichol. “He’s been a strong supporter of the Head Start program and this was a great opportunity for us to thank him for his commitment to our young people.”
Congressman Perlmutter also had an opportunity to participate in “ Dinosaur School ” with the Head Start class. Dinosaur School is part of the Incredible Years curriculum, an evidence-based social and emotional curriculum.
“It fills us with pride to have Congressman Perlmutter visit our program and ‘play’ with our children,” said Mizraim Cordero, Head Start administrator. “We are grateful for all he does in Washington to bring the interests of Adams County Head Start children and families to the forefront.”
In November 2007, the U.S. Congress passed the Improving Head Start for School Readiness Act of 2007. The legislation authorized $7.65 billion in Head Start funding for 2008 and $7.995 billion for 2009. Congressman Perlmutter was a key supporter of this bill. However, in late December 2007, Congress enacted the Omnibus Appropriations bill which decreased Head Start funding for 2008 to $6.88 billion, $770 million less than the legislation authorized.
