Perlmutter Statement on the lawsuit against President Trump violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) released the following statement on the lawsuit against President Trump violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. 196 Members of Congress signed onto the lawsuit which was filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The U.S. Constitution requires all public officials to seek the consent of Congress before accepting any benefits or gifts from a foreign country.
“I felt it necessary to join this lawsuit because President Trump refuses to separate himself from his business interests and release his tax returns. Never before in our history, have we had a President come remotely close to violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. Every President dating back to Richard Nixon has not only released their tax returns but also taken steps to ensure public trust and avoid real or perceived impropriety.
President Trump and his family continue to operate and promote their business interests at home and abroad. The evidence suggests foreign governments have granted approval of trademarks, paid for rooms and meals at Trump hotels, and lease space at Trump properties. The courts will now decide if the President is violating the Constitution by continuing to profit from foreign governments without the consent of Congress. Our democracy demands vigilance and we cannot stand for foreign intrusion in it.”
