Lakewood, Colo. - U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) released the following statement after the U.S. airstrikes in Syria:
“As I said in 2013, Assad’s use of chemical weapons against Syrian’s was unthinkable, reprehensible and a clear violation of international law. At the time I supported President Obama using targeted military action against the Assad regime to prevent further atrocities. And while President Obama respectfully deferred to Congress for additional authority, ultimately military action wasn’t necessitated.
"Albeit, Russia and the U.S. agreed to remove all chemical weapons from Syria. And clearly the Assad Regime and Russia didn’t uphold their end of the bargain. Russia has a sustained presence in Syria and if they’re serious about stopping these atrocities they would’ve helped facilitate the destruction and removal of all chemical weapons.
"Thus, while I do not oppose targeted airstrikes against the Syrian regime, President Trump should come before Congress and seek authority for any further escalated or expanded action. President Trump should clearly lay out his Administration’s long-term policy towards Syria, ISIS and Iran to Americans."
