Congressman Perlmutter Calls for Continuing Improvement by State Homeland Security Officials

January 3, 2008

Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, who is a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement concerning the audit report from the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (OIG).

“This report highlights some grave errors in administering and managing homeland security efforts in Colorado from 2003-2006. The bottom line is that in this time period our state homeland security efforts were sloppy, and we did not manage and operate our tasks as well as we are capable of doing, but that is changing.

“In 2005, the Colorado State Auditor conducted its own investigation into allegations of misused federal homeland security grants. I commend the state for taking the first steps toward correcting these shortfalls. Since that time, improvements have been made. Governor Ritter and his administration are taking steps to make a more sensible structure for Colorado ’s homeland security function, but this improvement needs to be accelerated.

“I am committed to working with the Governor and his staff toward accountability and improvement in our state’s ability to administer federal homeland security grants. It is important for local, state and federal officials to work together so the public remains confident in our state’s ability to deal with security events.

State and local firefighters and law enforcement represent the frontline in the defense against natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. Because of this, the federal government has a responsibility to ensure these local first responders are fully trained, equipped and prepared. I will continue to work through my committee to ensure Colorado gets every dollar we are entitled to for homeland security purposes, but I will also commit to making sure these funds are used in the best interest of the safety and security of our state and nation.”
