KUSA - Somewhere around the seven-hour mark, Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colorado) took a break from the sit-in Democrats were staging on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Perlmutter stepped off the floor for a moment to talk to 9NEWS about two gun control measures he and fellow Democrats want the Republican leadership to allow the House to consider.

“One that says that if you’re on the terrorist watch list, you can’t buy a gun and the other says we need to have good background checks all across this nation,” Perlmutter said.

The congressman said he believes one or both bills would pass if the measures were allowed to come to the floor for a vote.

The push for gun legislation comes in the wake of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. On June 12, a gunman killed 49 people inside a gay nightclub in Orlando.

“It just keeps happening again and again and again, and we’ve not taken up any legislation in four years despite Newtown and San Bernardino and now Orlando,” Perlmutter said.

Each time House Republicans declared a recess on Wednesday, cameras inside the House Chamber were shut off, prompting Democrats to take out their phones.

“Some people are using an app called Periscope,” Perlmutter said. “Other people have sent Snapchats, other people have tweeted.”

Perlmutter was joined by Democratic Congresswoman Diana DeGette and dozens of lawmakers during the hours-long sit-in on Wednesday.

9NEWS reached out to the seven U.S. Representatives for Colorado and asked how each of them would vote on the two measures House Democrats are proposing.

Rep. Diana DeGette (D)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Diana DeGette is taking a stand for Americans’ safety tonight by helping to sustain the historic sit-in on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. More than 200 House and Senate Democrats have joined the effort over the course of the past 10-plus hours. They want to force the Republican leadership to act on legislation to prevent gun violence.

“Congress must contend with this issue and pass common-sense legislation to curb gun violence, whatever it takes,” DeGette said after spending all afternoon with colleagues at the sit-in and then defending the microphone this evening to keep the Republican leadership from ending the demonstration. “This is a moment of truth.”

The House has the opportunity to vote on two bipartisan bills – one tightening loopholes in background checks for firearm purchases, and the other preventing people on the Terrorist Watch List from buying guns.  But House Republican leaders want to let their members leave Washington for an early summer break without confronting this critical national security issue.

“We have witnessed way too many tragedies in this country involving guns, including the mass shootings at Columbine and Aurora,” DeGette said.  “I want to take this opportunity to thank the countless constituents who have been with me all day long, posting supportive messages on social media and calling to show their appreciation.  We’re going to keep up this fight.”

Rep. Jared Polis (D)

“Rep. Polis is a co-sponsor of the bipartisan Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act.  The bill would amend the criminal code to stop the issuance of gun licenses to people on the National Counterterrorism Center’s terrorism watch list.

He also supports the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act.  The bill closes loopholes that allow people to purchase guns without background checks.”

Rep. Ken Buck (R)

"423 American women are pregnant and have Zika. The Democrats are blocking the people's House from dealing with a serious health concern. Shame on them!"

Rep. Scott Tipton (R)

“Further restricting access to firearms for law-abiding American citizens will not prevent these types of attacks from happening. The focus instead must be on how we can strengthen national security and counterterrorism efforts to identify and stop warped and radicalized individuals with terrorist ties who are set on killing innocent Americans. I stand behind our Constitution and the fundamental rights the Second Amendment affords all Americans. I support efforts to prevent illegal gun trafficking to foreign nations, without infringing on U.S. citizens' Second Amendment rights.”

Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D)

“It shouldn’t take members of Congress holding a protest to get a vote on common sense gun violence prevention measures that are supported by the majority of the American people. But if that’s what is needed to demand action, that’s what we will do. It is time we do whatever is necessary to ensure our constituent’s voices are heard and action is taken to protect our communities. It is time to provide the funding and resources needed to enforce our existing gun safety laws and to research how to prevent gun violence. It is time to enact common sense measures such as universal background checks to keep guns out of dangerous hands. And it is time to prevent guns from getting in the hands of suspected terrorists and to keep military-style weapons off our streets. There is no more time for silence. There is only time to act."
