Perlmutter Invites Students to Participate in Annual Congressional Art Competition

U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) invites all high school students from the 7th Congressional District to participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in each congressional district across the country. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.

The winning artwork from each Congressional district will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the United States Capitol building for one year with the artist and a family member invited to the Annual Congressional Art Show reception held in June in Washington, DC. All participants and their families will be recognized locally during a reception at Red Rocks Community College Library on May 6 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Last year’s winner from the 7th Congressional District was Mingxin Ye from Golden High School with an oil painting titled “Storyteller”.

Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Entry guidelines and an information/release form for the 2016 competition are available

All entries must meet the following criteria:

  • Be two dimensional
  • Be no larger than 28 inches wide by 28 inches tall by 4 inches thick when framed
  • Not weigh more than 15 pounds, including frame
  • Be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws

All artwork is due by May 2, 2016. Judging will take place on May 5, 2016.

If you plan on submitting a piece of artwork, please contact Hannah Mullen in Rep. Perlmutter’s office to confirm these guidelines and your participation at or (303) 274-7944. For more information, please visit
