U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) released the following statement today after the President announced new steps to prevent gun violence:
“The executive actions announced today by President Obama are an important start in reducing the number of lives lost to tragic and senseless gun violence. I support the President taking action within his authority to enforce the law that’s in place, expand access to mental health treatment, and ensure people or businesses selling guns are conducting background checks.
We can and we will balance our rights under the 2nd Amendment while enforcing existing laws. In the absence of action from a Republican-controlled Congress, the Administration must do what it can to improve the health and public safety of our communities by making sure guns don’t get in the hands of criminals or individuals with mental health issues.
“I am troubled, as most Americans are, by the number of gun-related deaths in our country every day. We may not be able to prevent every tragedy but I have personally met with too many families who are left to grieve after the loss of their loved ones due to gun violence here at home in Colorado. Congress should still act but I believe the President’s actions are a step in the right direction and can reduce and help prevent the number of Americans killed by gun violence.”
